The best Palm Springs outfits are light, breathable and built in layers: a swimsuit and cover-up for the day, a dress or linen set for lunch, and one extra layer for the evening. Color and print are welcome. Heavy fabrics are not. Below you will find what to wear by season, by occasion and by time of day, with a packing list at the end.
The weather decides most of the outfit. Lonely Planet describes October to April as the most comfortable stretch for visiting, while summer commonly passes 100°F, with July and August highs around 108°F. AAA reports January and February average highs of at least 70°F.
| Season | What it feels like | Outfit direction |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec to Feb) | Warm days, cool nights | Light pants or a sundress by day, a jacket or wrap after sunset |
| Spring (Mar to May) | Visit Greater Palm Springs guidance cites 51 to 94°F | Layers: swimsuit and cover-up, a linen shirt, a light sweater |
| Summer (Jun to Sep) | Triple-digit heat | Loose, short, lightweight pieces, poolwear, early and late activity |
| Fall (Oct to Nov) | Comfortable, still sunny | Spring formula with fewer layers at midday |
The city’s own media kit says winter days average in the 70s with nights in the mid-40s. That gap is why a day outfit and a night outfit are rarely the same one.
This is the season where people overpack warm clothes or underpack them. Plan for a warm afternoon and a chilly night. A sundress or shorts with a linen shirt works at noon. Add a wrap, denim jacket or light sweater when the sun goes down. Mount San Jacinto rises to 10,831 feet according to the same media kit, so if you take the tram up the mountain, bring a real layer.
In summer the heat is the main design brief. AAA notes that late morning through late afternoon is uncomfortable for outdoor activity, with early morning and evening better suited. Choose clothes around the schedule, not only the venue. Pool and shade by midday, walking and dining once the sun drops.
Good summer pieces:
Palm Springs has its own style language, shaped by mid-century architecture and old Hollywood leisure. PS Fashion lists sweeping maxi dresses, vibrant printed minis, straw hats, flowing dusters, wide-leg pants, cutout jumpsuits and crop tops as fitting the setting. A 2026 Who What Wear edit built around Slim Aarons-style imagery points to crochet crop tops, bright two-piece sets, floral minidresses, bug-eye sunglasses, linen shirts and white loafers.
Lonely Planet says the desert gives you more color freedom than most everyday wardrobes. Yellow, orange, turquoise and sage all suit the landscape. If you usually wear black and neutral colors, a trip here is a good reason to pack one bold piece.
Most Palm Springs trips revolve around a hotel pool. Visit Greater Palm Springs frames pool dressing as a system, not a single swimsuit: swimsuit, cover-up, sandals, sunglasses, hat and a light layer can cover poolside, lunch and indoor spaces without a full change.
A practical sequence for one day:
For more pool-to-dinner combinations, our guide to beach club outfits that pack light covers the same logic in more detail. If you pick sandals, the resort sandals guide explains what holds up on hot pavement and wet tile.
A versatile one-piece works as swimwear and as a bodysuit under shorts or a wrap skirt. A bikini is lighter to pack and dries faster. Men’s swim shorts that look like regular shorts let you go from pool to patio without changing. Pack at least two swimsuits so one can dry while you wear the other.

Our bikini collection, one-piece swimsuits and men’s shorts are all designed for this kind of vacation use.
Palm Springs is more than a pool. People walk Palm Canyon Drive, visit vintage shops, hike and see the mid-century architecture.
The same PS Fashion piece describes an informal dress code that mixes breezy vacationwear with quiet-luxury accessories. For restaurants, it suggests a step up: a structured dress, block heels and a small clutch. You do not need formal clothing. A dress, a linen shirt with tailored shorts or trousers, and a small bag are enough almost everywhere.
Keep a wrap, light blazer or denim jacket on hand. Evenings cool off, particularly in winter, and indoor air conditioning can be strong. For men, linen shirts, chinos or tailored shorts and loafers or clean sneakers fit most dinners.
We design swimwear for women and men, and we see the same packing mistake often: people bring five outfits for the pool and nothing that works from pool to dinner. Our approach is to start with the swimsuit and build outward.

Palm Springs rewards simple, well-cut pieces. Choose a swimsuit you feel good in for hours, because you will wear it more than almost anything else on the trip. Add a cover-up that works as a dress or beach layer. Then pick one print and one solid so you can mix and match. Attention to cut, fabric and fit is what makes a piece last past one vacation, and timeless shapes in strong color suit this destination better than trend items.
We also suggest thinking about when you will wear each piece. In summer, most hours outdoors fall before 11 a.m. and after 5 p.m., so swimwear and a cover-up should be your main outfit, with one dinner look on top.

A capsule keeps your suitcase small. Our guides for Tulum and Ibiza use the same method, adapted for each place. For a long weekend, this works:
| Category | Pieces |
|---|---|
| Swimwear | 2 to 3 swimsuits (one bold, one neutral, one print) |
| Cover-ups | 1 crochet or gauze cover-up, 1 linen shirt |
| Day | 1 maxi dress or sundress, 1 pair of shorts or wide-leg pants |
| Evening | 1 polished dress or linen set, 1 wrap or light jacket |
| Shoes | Flat sandals, walking shoes, 1 dressier pair |
| Accessories | Wide-brim hat, sunglasses, small bag |
If you want to plan which pieces you already own against what you still need, the travel capsule wardrobe guide from Style To Cart shows how to build more outfits from 10 to 12 pieces.
For a sense of what travel editors pack, Travel + Leisure’s 2025 packing guide lists an organic cotton gauze maxi dress at $50, a crochet cover-up at $36 and a versatile one-piece at $75 on sale (originally $83). Those were prices at publication and may have changed.
We offer designer swimwear for women and men: bikinis, one-piece swimsuits, cover-ups and men’s shorts, plus the BÄDĒ SUIT collection. Designs come from Lital Simel-Rhedrick, with collaboration collections created with online fashion influencers. You can see the full range on lanimal.co. Free shipping applies on US orders over $150.

Based on the Visit Palm Springs FAQ and the Greater Palm Springs packing guide:
Pack lightweight, breathable clothes, swimwear, a cover-up, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. Add a sweater or light jacket for cool evenings and air-conditioned spaces. Bring a reusable water bottle as well.
Expect a wide range. The Greater Palm Springs guidance cites spring temperatures from 51 to 94°F, so dress in layers. A sundress or shorts with a linen shirt works for the day, and a light jacket handles the evening. Keep swimwear in your bag for the hotel pool.
Lonely Planet describes October to April as generally the most comfortable period. Summer often reaches or exceeds 100°F, so plan outdoor time for early morning and evening. Clothing should be lighter and looser in those months.
Not a strict one. The general style is relaxed vacation wear, with a slightly more polished look for restaurants. Check the individual venue or hotel if you plan a special dinner or event.
